About the company
A data science and analytics education platform serving millions of learners
Engineering Manager, Portugal or Belgium
A data science and analytics education platform serving millions of learners is hiring an Engineering Manager for a full-stack team. This is an AI-native organisation, not an AI-curious one: agentic coding tools like Claude Code and Codex are core to daily work, and you're expected to be hands-on with them and push the team's AI fluency as the baseline.
What you'll do
- Build and develop a high-performing full-stack team, with a culture of ownership, urgency, and accountability
- Drive delivery end to end, idea through build, release, measurement, and iteration, balancing speed with long-term platform health
- Set and keep raising the bar for agentic tooling use across the team
- Partner with Product and Design to shape the roadmap using data, metrics, and user feedback
- Lead technical decision-making and architecture for scalability, reliability, and maintainability, increasingly for LLM-powered services
- Champion strong practices in testing, observability, and code quality
What you'll bring
- 7+ years building software across the stack, with command of scalable system design, modern API design, and software lifecycle best practices
- 3+ years leading engineering teams of senior and/or staff-level engineers, with people growing under your guidance
- A genuinely hands-on approach: when a senior engineer hits a problem, you can solve it yourself, not just delegate it
- A deep, sustained AI-native working practice, daily use of agentic coding tools like Claude Code and Codex over a long period, including familiarity with MCP
- Recent startup experience, ideally as an engineering manager, at a company roughly up to a couple of hundred people
- Strong communication, and proven ability to take large, ambiguous problems end to end in a cross-functional product team
- Backend or full-stack engineering background
Experience with TypeScript, Node.js, and React, and having written custom skills or wired up MCP servers, is a plus.
Based in Portugal (fully remote) or Belgium (hybrid if within roughly an hour of Leuven, otherwise remote). Pay not advertised.
